Penfolds, the first name that comes to mind when you think about Australian wine, was founded by a young english doctor who migrated to one of his country's most distant colonies a century and a half ago. With their home in South Australia, Penfolds is one of the largest and most prominent Australian wine producers. The makers of Grange Hermitage (shiraz), led by the late and inimitable Max Schubert, the winemaking team is now spearheaded by 1991 wine magazines red winemaker of the year, John Duval.
2006 Cabernet Merlot: The nose shows fresh, lively fruit aromas of plum, red currant, red cherry and rhubarb with some dark chocolate tones, integrated with creamy smooth, vanillin oak with some spicy, charry overtones.
A medium bodied wine with flavours of plum and mulberry across the sweet, succulent mid-palate that finishes with even, soft, talc-like tannins. The finish is mouth filling with expansive, creamy textural oak.
2006 Chardonnay: Brilliant pale straw in colour. Aromas of lifted stone fruits and freshly crushed nectarine are surrounded by a subtle spicy (freshly ground nutmeg) oak. A honey character, from lees contact, gives the wine depth.
A full-flavored wine with fruit - rockmelon and yellow peach - at the fore. A vanilla and malt creaminess deepens the palate and provides complexity. The acid is subtle and ensures a refreshing finish.

Lejay-Lagoute Creme de Cassis de Dijon Liqueur
Lejay Cassis & Le Double Cassis
Lejay-Lagoute created the original Creme de cassis, the blood-red sweet liqueur made from blackcurrants, in 1841.
The Lejay-Lagoute Crème de Cassis de Dijon is a marvellous liqueur with the fine aroma and incomparable taste of ripe blackcurrant fruit. The recipe is 100% natural: fresh fruit is delivered in crates, crushed and macerated in its juice in large barrels that contain alcohol. This operation, which is to extract completely the active elements from the fruit, lasts for two months.
Pour 1/5 of Creme de Cassis in a wine or champagne glass, then 4/5 of White Burgundy to savour a classic and refreshing Kir. Should you prefer replacing the white wine with the bubbles of a sparkling wine or Champagne, you will then get a Kir Royal.

2007 Singing Gruner Vettliner
The dream of Laurenz Maria Moser V and his daughter, Sophie Maria, is to bring Austrias indigenous grape to our table. It starts with this singing G.V. It has elegance and finesse, hand in hand with a distinctive fruity character and a rewarding finish.
There’s a running joke that if a sommelier offers you a taste of a mystery white wine, the answer is always gruner veltliner, such is their geeky fascination with this Austrian grape. The arrival of these Laurenz V wines is a turning point for the variety in Australia, making a play into more accessible territory without compromising the essence of the variety.

Quartz Reef 2005 Pinot Noir - Central Ontago NZ
"Firm and very intense, with muscularity to ripe black cherry, pomegranate and spice box notes. Crushed stone flavors underscore the concentrated fruit, with cedary oak and cut tannins honing the persistent finish. Drink now through 2011."

Wine Spectator, April 2007
"Dense and stylish with flavours of red cherry, plum, dark chocolate, mocha, licorice and a hint of spice in addition to a seasoning of classy oak. It's drinking well now, but a core of ripe tannins promises to help it age gracefully. Cellar for up to 7 years."
91/100, 4 stars

Latest Release from Shaw and Smith - Adelaide Hills
2006 Shiraz
2007 M3 Chardonnay
2008 Sauvignon Blanc
2006 Shiraz: Deep red in colur with purple hues. The bouquet consists of dark fruits with plum/spice characters. The wine is medium to full-bodied with trademark plum and spice characters in the palate. The nose shows savoury fleshy aromas and the palate exhibits ripe plummy fruit and plenty of fine drying tannins. Subtle oak flavours support rather than dominate the fruit.
2007 M3 Chardonnay: Paler than normal chardonnay, the M3 opens slightly austere, offering restrained fruit, a hint of honeysuckle and great palate length. There's a touch of toasted nuts complexity, and the oak is beautifully handled. With white stone fruit and savoury nutty characters, this is an elegantly structured wine with a long, fine, bone dry finish. While not as fully aged as it's potential, it's drinking just as well right now. A superior single vineyard white with a soft, delicious dryness, that demands to be experienced.
2008 Sauvignon Blanc: Vibrant pale straw with brilliant tinges. The aroma has restrained sauvignon grassiness coupled with riper fruit characters. Intense bouquets of tropical fruits and citrus peel, a lively clean nose of ripe tropical characters, and restrained herbaceousness. A regional speciality, Sauvignon Blanc performs wonderfully well in the cooler climate of the Adelaide Hills.

T'Gallant Winemakers Juliet 2007 Moscato
A fully aromatic profile, backed by inimitable ripe fruit flavours, that transports the drinker to another place. There are scents of orange and honey, white berries and stonefruits, fruity and full of flowers, there are roses and white carnation, very ripe grape bouquets, a beguiling beginning to this wine. A flourish of hot pink with a little of the fermentation spritz, flavours of a lavish fruit punch, wild strawberries, ripe peaches and rose petals, Juliet enjoys a decadently full palate of ripe fruit, with savoury notes, soft acid and a long delicious finish. This wine is perfectly harmonious with all desserts, marvelous with creme caramel, perfect with creamy poultry dishes, a delicate sweet wine with the advantage of being only 5.5% alcohol
